Oral Piercings and Dental Health

Woman has a piercing in the language

Piercings are becoming more and more common, and it’s not just ears anymore. Now it’s noses, stomachs, and even oral piercings. Oral piercings, in the cheek, lip, or tongue, are now very popular – but having an oral piercing and caring about your oral health are not two mutually exclusive things. Here are some things you should know about oral piercings and how they can affect your oral health.

Health risks of oral piercings

There are risks that come with any kind of piercing. With an oral piercing, you should watch out for:

·      Gum recession or injury, which can happen if the piercing is always rubbing up against the gums

·      Infection, if bacteria from the mouth gets into the piercing site. This risk is increased if you have a piercing and also smoke or use other tobacco products.

·      Heart problems, which can result from bacteria going from the piercing site through the bloodstream and into the heart

·      Cracked or chipped teeth, which can result from your piercing constantly coming into contact with teeth

While not a health risk, having a piercing can also interfere with talking or eating, because of the excess saliva that may result from a piercing.

Taking care of your piercing

The most important thing to remember if you have an oral piercing is to keep it clean. Don’t forget to keep up good brushing and flossing habits, by brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Stay away from tobacco products and avoid putting nonfood objects in your mouth, such as pens and pencils, as these may have damaging bacteria. Avoid playing with your piercing, and take the piercing out first if you are going to be involved in a team sport or other activity where the piercing may get tugged on.

And of course, going to see your dentist twice a year is always good advice – but it is especially important if you have a piercing, so that your dentist can check and make sure your teeth aren’t being damaged.
